Independent Winemakers Cultivate Research!
FIVI4FUTURE is a project launched by the Italian Federation of Independent Winemakers (FIVI), which, through a multi-year strategic action plan, focuses on environmental sustainability and the protection of biodiversity.
The program aligns with the European Union’s ten-year Farm to Fork plan, designed to guide the transition toward a fair, healthy, and environmentally friendly food system. In the agricultural sector, it aims to reduce the use of pesticides by 50% by 2030.
The first initiative is a research project developed by FIVI in collaboration with the consultancy firm Perleuve, led by agronomist Giovanni Bigot, and the University of Udine. The project aims to increase vineyard biodiversity through the gradual elimination of synthetic insecticides, the reduction of organic insecticides, and the monitoring of beneficial organisms.
The three-year project begins with the monitoring of pests and their natural antagonists in vineyards. The collected data is shared via the 4Grapes app by individual wineries, enabling the creation of a mapping system of organisms present in vineyards.
In the initial phase, the 82 winemakers who participated conducted 3,912 surveys across 277 vineyards, monitoring a total of 61,657 organisms.
The goal of FIVI4FUTURE is to train winemakers, fostering greater awareness and understanding of increasingly sustainable practices.
